j.w wrote: Wed Oct 12, 2022 3:09 pm @brokensword so very sorry to hear about your fish loss, sick ones and losing a turtle. Sure hope your treatments work and you don't lose anymore and the other one's w/the ulcer's heal up soon. I'm of no help w/diseases of Koi or any fish so all I can do is pray!

Heading out today to do an apple run w/my friend Jessie up the road. Will be taking her truck over to Eastern Washington, a 3& 1/2 hour trip there! Will fill up her truck bed w/Honey Crisp apples and then head home. Will be a long, hard day but she wants apples for her pigs. Says it is a finishing thing so they taste better after they are, well you know. Jessie is a farmer all the way and eats her own animal meats. Guess that is the healthy way but I could never do it. They would all end up as pets! I don't think this long drive is worth it but hey, I'm just going along as the help and don't have to pay for the fuel, thank Heavens!
thanks for the prayers!

Sure seems like a loss, giving pigs HONEY CRISPS, but I guess the deer would get the fallen ones otherwise, hey? And that's a long trip, but I suppose you can regale your friend with homey Annex stories of life down on the range, huh? Don't fergit to mention the ridin' koi, okay? They'd appreciate a bit of royal love don'tcha know!

Be safe. Oh, don't forget you have a chapter waitin'...

@brokensword trip was long but yes we chatted all the way there and back. Juan my friends farm hand came too so we had more help. Filled the truck bed all up w/all those yummy apples and I got a supreme box of them to take home and so did Juan. Ate a few while picking also and they were so sweet and crisp! There are tons of apples on the trees and on the ground still as they are all done picking many, many acres! All that's left will just be eaten by birds, deer or rot where they fall. Jessie will feed a lot to her 3 pigs over the next 10 days but she is going to use a lot for her own usage also. She will make applesauce, dried fruit etc. out of them to store.

So I presume chapter 4 is ready? As I read chapter 3 and it's a fun book to read. I'm really enjoying it! Thanks for sharing and I hope everyone else will take advantage of this freebee that you are giving us!
Not often nowadays do we get anything good for free ya know! :queen: 8-)

I salute Jessie's ability to be more self-sufficient! Already doing some of that here, too, as the economy doesn't look that good in the near future. I'm planning on one more year before I hang it up, but who knows; may have to continue as what we had in the retirement fund sure is taking a hit! Lucky mrsbrokensword is younger and will be the breadwinner for more years and hopefully, the economy gets better.

Had a honey crisp today, so I envy you your 'box'! Best apple I've ever tasted, for sure!

Thank you for the kind words re my writing; it's very appreciated! Do be honest and let me know specifics either way; can't get better at this without honest critique!

brokensword wrote: Tue Oct 11, 2022 8:03 pm so, been having some fish issues and having to read up/learn about koi diseases. Still not sure, but decided to douse the pond with proform C, which is supposed to work against some parasites (the smaller ones, as opposed to gill flukes, round worm, etc) and fungus, as well as help the fish's slime coat and up their immunity. A few fish developed what looked like wounds to me, but were probably more like ulcers. I've tested but the parameters were fine (ammonia was 0), the water is clear, the fish (even those WITH the suspected bugs/fungus) have been acting fine, until a couple weren't. I tried to save 3 and so far, have lost them all. One got dropsy, which I knew would be almost impossible to save, while two others developed ulcers that spread and began affecting their behavior. I probably waited too long to try and save them but I was hoping they'd battle back naturally. Once I saw them swimming oddly, I paid more attention and got them out and into a hospital tank. None made it. So, because others have similar ulcer/fungus patches on their bodies, went with the proform C I had bought a year or so ago. One dose last night, another happening tonight and one more tomorrow. Had to wait for warmer temps to keep the water temp up (though, it can be used in water 50F and lower). They say to do water changes but I'm adverse to doing that, so am keeping an eye and perhaps, my ministrations will be for naught. The water change (up to 50%) is to make the chemical more effective as one of the two components, the formalin, binds to floating/organic matter. And I DO have a fair bit of floating plants, though not a lot of floating organics. But the bog would have it and I figure once the proC hit there, it would negate some effectiveness. Hence, I stopped the flow to the bog, waited until night so the fish would NOT stir anything up from the bottom, and crossed my fingers. So far, no problem. Whether I'm positively affecting the fish has yet to be seen. I'm doing this now as those that have these ulcers (which, btw, most have had since mid/early summer and I've been monitoring to see if they grew etc) will be more vulnerable once winter hits and then into spring (when fish are MOST vulnerable). We'll have to see what happens over the winter, though. I'm hopeful the treatment will help.

Annnnnd, ad if that wasn't enough pond stress, about a month ago I noticed the largest turtle, a male we call Cap'n Jack, hadn't been seen. I went looking after 2 weeks but didn't find him hung up or caught in anything on the land-side of the pond, so just waited figuring he'd eventually show. Nada, he didn't and I went looking again--and found an opening in the screen that I attached to the pond wall bottom, on the east side. The earth had pulled it down (had fiberglas screen stapled and plastic chicken wire nailed there) and there was a gap that a persistent turtle bent on escaping, could probably do so. So, while I thought maybe it had died (caught in rocks/waterfall/etc or from some sickness I wasn't aware of), now I figure he got out and hopefully, at least, made his way back to the natural large pond at the street's end. And I have been taking them inside and overwintering for the past couple years, so began this process last weekend with only ONE turtle spotted and caught. Now I'm getting nervous; have the other two also escaped or died? I sent my gatorcam around the whole pond, taking out a lot of water lettuce so I could navigate the camera the whole way, and upon viewing the video, saw ZERO turtles. I couldn't believe it but had they too been lost? Was feeling a bit glum about the last half of the ponding summer, what with the loss of 3 koi, 4 others having similar ulcerous growths/wounds, and now, losing 3 of the 4 turtles I've had for the past 4 summers. Then yesterday, went out to feed the fish some garlic (supposed to work against fish parasites) and whaddya know--TWO turtles basking like usual! So, was really relieved but now, had to fetch them inside for the winter. I got one, the female named Gemma, fairly easily but spooked the other when I made a dive for it. He didn't come back up and it was getting darker so knew I'd missed my chance for the day. And I ALMOST had him but the net didn't scoop properly and he evaded my attempt! Came home today, peeked in, didn't see him and figured I might not get him in as we're expecting rain tomorrow, so he'll not be basking then. I went back out to be a sentinel and got lucky, spotting his head poked out amongst the water lettuce. This time, did my ninja trick and kept quiet--until mrsbrokensword joined me in the pondhouse and the turtle panicked and dropped down. But I knew it might yet come back as he hadn't seen the net yet. So, waited again and voila! he swam under the water lettuce until he was practically OVER my submerged net! It got a bit tricky as he was in amongst the water lily pots and my net was in front, so I gave it a shot and just barely managed to scoop him up as he dove again.

So, got the remaining 3 tucked away in the basement pool (which btw, has suddenly developed what I suspect is a BOTTOM leak!!) and now, I'll begin working on trimming water lilies, taro, and starting to lay in the winter tent wood structure next week (probably!). At least this story has a small silver lining!

And that's the state of the pond at the brokensword residence!
I'm very sorry to hear of your struggle and fish loss, I really hope the worst is behind you @brokensword Image

@brokensword sorry if you are looking for a critic here w/your story as I'm not good at that. Mom always said "If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all"!
I'm not a writer either and I really can't see anything wrong w/what you have written other than sometimes I don't understand the British slang unless you have explained it in there :smrk:

I like to read it on my tablet but so far the only way I can is to email it to myself and then I can open my mail on the tablet and it's there. Tried getting it by opening the forum and going to Swordofshakespeare site and something goes weird when signing in. I can see it fine on my desktop too and my laptop, just not the tablet w/o doing the mail thing. Oh well at least I found a way to read it on there. I like to read it on there so I can easily enlarge the print w/fingers.
Haven't gotten to Chapter 4 yet but maybe tonight :queen:

what exactly happens on the tablet? Can you see the forum at all or no? Perhaps some setting on your tablet is interfering with the sign in process. I know I have to input my member name and pw on other computers except this main one, so maybe your tablet doesn't have the correct pw? or member name? Seems like you SHOULD be able to open and see. Now, when I go to that forum, I do have to always input the same pw=open; is that the issue I wonder? Let me know if there's something I can do!

No prob re critique; anything you want to note, tis fine. I don't explain the slang as I'm hoping it'll be given through context, for a bit more authenticity.

yep, me too, but I doubt it. I may have a mix of issues (koi pox, maybe costia, bit of fungus?) but it's only affecting a few. And they still act fine, until they suddenly don't. The 3 that died were probably too far into the disease, but I'm still learning. The dropsy one, well, I knew that would be futile but tried anyhow. I guess next summer, early, should let me know if this is something to live with (apparently, koi pox is common and not necessarily fatal) or it's progressing. Fish coming out of winter are always more vulnerable, so I have to get past that stage to see what's what. The goldfish, a few, have had tumors for a bit now and still act normal (I think they developed this from before the expansion when they were obviously too crowded) but don't have any of the koi issues. Fingers crossed and still reading up on it all! Thanks for the concern.

Oh my gosh...I just read this! (It's been crazy around here)...I am SO sorry that you are having these issues with your koi brokensword...Good news about being able to put the three turtles inside for the winter though. You never know what is introduced in our ponds when we bring in plants or other fish (or turtles) It's always a gamble...I noticed that Percy, my turtle, is VERY aggressive when competing for the fish food so I am wondering if it was possible for the koi to have been injured during feeding..If it is a fungus or parasite then hopefully your treatment will work. You have put so much hard work and love into that pond and its surroundings. If anyone can get to the bottom of this you can!

well, I doubt it's the turtles (though, I WAS suspicious the first time I noticed the 'wound/ulcer') as most of the time, the fish push the turtles out of THEIR way. I have to feed the fish on one side and throw more fish food on the other just to insure the turtles DO get their share! Probably, one of the fish is the culprit (bringing it in) though I haven't had issues with this koi seller in the past. And with a closed system, it does make me wonder. Definitely has made me stop even thinking of replacing/buying more. The treatment was for 3 successive days, so it's over but I still see a fish or two flashing. Didn't expect that, so not sure I did any good. They do say to do water changes but I didn't want to put 45F water into 60F at that quantity (they said to do 30%ish changes) and supposedly, it's for getting floating organics out of the water as the formalin (one of the two chemicals) attaches to them. Guess time will tell. All the fish are acting fine, eating the last time I fed them and this has been a 'thing' since at least mid summer. It's only since the weather started to change that it seems to have intensified. I read koi pox is like that, so it's probably at least that disease. All part of the learning process I guess but I take responsibility for the fishes' health personally. Bothers me that I can't just fix this. And I waited to even use the proform C as I'm not usually on team Chemical, ya know?

Thanks for the concern. Hoping future updates show improvement. None look like they're anywhere near death but the ones that did die, didn't either, until the last few days!

Speaking of loss, I no longer have a dog....not getting a puppy either even if it would ease the pain..nope! I have my parrot, 6 hens, my koi pond, and lots of wildlife around me so no more dogs or cats for me...it's not an easy decision though, if I come across the right puppy I will cave for sure

@brokensword how are your fish doing?
