@Gemma no heat in your winters would not be good. Think we could prolly make it here ok w/o it but it wouldn't be fun. Lots of sweaters and layers but we do have lots of firewood and a woodstove. As for food we might be in trouble there. I have no canning or loads of stuff in the freezer either.
I better start picking blackberries as I see tons of those now! Image

Gemma wrote: Tue Aug 16, 2022 4:15 pm So far today I picked up a bunch of tomatoes, onions and herbs from the garden, cooked it into tomato sauce Image and canned my very first jars
Very long process but hey if it comes out good it was all worth it and I'm happy!Image
Tomorrow I plan on going in the garden and pick all bunch of different veggies so I can make vegetable soup and can that too

I'm just starting out with this canning thingy, anyone on here preserves their own food?
How much room/space/jars have you provided for, esp come the fall harvest? LONG long ago, my mom canned stuff. Pretty good idea if any of the 'food shortage' rumors start coming true!!

Farmer Gemma; yep, aren't we lucky the Annex has an expert, ol lil queenie??? @j.w

:smileyhappy: :o
If for "room" you mean where am I going to keep the jars, I have room in the basement...not sure how many boxes of jars, I suppose I could get more....food shortage? Bad, yes, but not as bad as no heat Image
I was gonna say, but lil queenie beat me to it; the Annex is chock full o' wood; maybe you might think along those lines, along with the canning! Or, should you come up on the frozen side, I'm sure royalty here would allow the 'mopper' to sit closer to the fire on those nights, I mean, AFTER yer chores be done! (leastways, that's the deal offered to ME when I groused about heat!!!) Not a lot of sympathy, as you might have already noticed! Half the time, she's making snide comments about how the ridin' koi haven't been brushed down, how the saddle is always on the wet side. I give her this dumb and dumber look, which means 'they're fish; whatcha expect?' Not that THAT gets me very far...

If we had no heat it would totally suck but I'm sure we could manage ...we'd be ok, but my parrot wouldn't last a dayImage
