j.w wrote: Tue Jun 21, 2022 5:13 pm @brokensword you been a busy beaver! Hope all your hard work pays off especially the UW cam and the mower! The plants and seeds you can always fix but those other two deals you must have working right!

We took hubby's truck in today to get fixed up so we can hopefully use it again for truckin around in when needed. Have to have it working right for camping trips and hauling his big mower down to the rental to mow the back field.

Later today I go to see the eye doc. Haven't been to one in over 20 plus yrs! Might have dry eyes or who knows what, all I know is things ain't the way they used ta be! I do wear reading glasses and hopefully that's all as I'm not wanting to wear glasses all the time and prolly won't unless I need them to drive but that's it! I will feel my way around everything else if I have too.

Everything seems to be working okay, so fingers crossed it stays that way!

Is this truck ALSO from the 90s??? heh heh

You mean you can't get hub's mower into the back of that Subbie??? tsk tsk tsk; shoulda got a larger Subbie, methinks! What the heck we ripping off the village peeps re taxes if you don't apply them appropriately?? Sheesh, gonna hafta look closer at your Queen renewal license next time it come due, sure enough!

We all get old, j.w; no doubt, the eyes are not as sharp as they used to be! Does this affect you ONLY for near objects? I know I tried hard NOT to wear my glasses EXCEPT for driving just because I think the more you wear them, the quicker your eye sight deteriorates, so I've been able to go for a checkup like every 10 years or so. Need reading glasses now for sure (just so everything is sharp, not that I can't see/read per se) and the ones for driving (again, can see but don't want to miss what the signs say until I'm right on top of them!). Hopefully, you'll only need to up your reading glasses strength. I think mine's at 1.25 right now, maybe 1.50 - I sort of forget!

Yeah, another sign of old age--writing lots of notes for myself!!

Good to hear all is so far working out for ya!

Yes the Dodge is a 1998 diesel duely and in great shape. Just had a worn out leaky tranny line that they replaced and maybe something else I can't remember, that's why it was losing fluid so no biggy. It's ready to pick up today.

Ripping off the peons is the Queens job isn't it? The one w/the biggest stick is in charge and I qualify!

Eyes turned out pretty good. Said some tiny signs of cataracts but may never amount to anything or maybe in 10 to 15 yrs he said. Need a stronger pair of readers and he said I could get some distance ones for tv viewing at night so I can see the words and subtitles easier but said it was my choice. I told him no bi-focal's and he said just get a distance pair and I can use when I want to. Said I didn't need for driving but said if I did I would notice a bit of clarity. I am farsighted he said. I agree w/you if you use the glasses too much I think your eyes get lazy and depend on them too much.
Soooo...seems the UW cam is once again not working! Took 8 hours, but suddenly started getting fuzzy images and I knew then the case was leaking! Took everything out, cam is still alive but for the life of me, can't figure out why it's leaking. Same sealer as before...so, fully frustrated, I'm now opting for design #4, which is to take one of those waterproof jars with latching lid, drill a hole for the cable, cut a hole in the bottom to install a flat, clear piece of glass (couldn't find any with a clear bottom!) and try try again. This time, it'll be without the cam though and since it's clear (the other was pvc pipe), I can tell if there's water in it easier. This has turned out to be my personal nightmare, I guess...sigh. ALMOST succumbed to buying a ready-made UW cam all over again...until I looked at the prices (which have almost doubled my original purchase!) and knowing the less expensive ones will NOT focus clearly under 6', I'm stubbornly back to the drawing board. This jar thingy better work...

glad you got the truck fixed and it wasn't anything major! Be sure to get some pics of YOU on this hemi-mower so we can proudly display your cutting prowess to ALL the peons here in the CAstle, hey? Should make for some great word fodder!!

Don't know about that 'biggest stick thing, but surely you wield a mean scepter!!

I'm going to have to tell mrsbrokensword re your lil eye-doc trick; she has issues seeing the tv at times too! Glad your eyes are doing well; keep them that way!

sad, isn't it? Around here, we lose power probably 6 times a year, and very rarely for less than a day, more typical is 2-3 days. Have serious plans to see about a whole house generator (been saving up for one for 3 years now!) and prob will pull the trigger this autumn. Sucks running cords everywhere and filling up the gasoline generator every 8 hours...hope all is well in GemmaLand again!

I wear daily contacts and I can't get a refill unless I see my eye doc once a year...I've had the same prescription for 5 yrs so why waste my time and money?...so that really sucks! Image
Gemma; mrsbrokensword just takes her prescription to Costco and they fill it, so if you can get your prescription...and can locate a Costco...you're good to go! No docs need be involved!

:-P
yes but doesn't the prescription expires after 12mos and to get a new one I have to see the eye doc?

All is well here, thank you!
I agree generators are a blessing but still a pain, even with a decent one we had to choose to run either the pond or the AC..we chose the pond of course
Hubby wants to do the house generator, and it probably is a good idea (if they don't shut down the pipeline), but would a house generator be able to support the entire household?
He also would like solar panels and even about this there's too much conflicting info out there, it might not be all easy and good as they want you to believe.
A friend of ours installed them a yr ago, he still tied to the power company because in the winter if the panels don't get enough sun he can't run his house on solar alone, even if the engineers custom built the solar grid according to his house and average daily power usage ...and what if we invest all this money and then the type of energy changes...it's hard to know what the best thing to do is

a whole house backup generator does indeed, do the whole house. That is, YOU choose the size you want and it will provide energy for X amount of the house. Obviously, the larger, the more expensive the unit. These run off the natural gas line to your house. Last cost estimate I got (last summer) was $10K without AC and $12K with it. So, I'm not expecting prices went down and that's part of my procrastination as I already thought it was a lot! I was thinking of maybe hiring someone to do the elect panel hookup and the gas hookup and I'd do all the other, including getting the unit to it's base outside the house. Thinking, I said, not set in stone. I really don't want any mistakes here (gas can explode, ya know?) so I'll probably just have a company do it all, IF I can keep that same price and I can convince myself putting gasoline in the generator I have isn't nearly as bad as I think it is! We'll see, I'm really on the fence on this one. If it cost half that, I'd do it, but 10 grand? Sheesh. Then again, gasoline is going up so every time I use it, it's gonna cost me minimum $75 a day each day the power is out!

I agree with you in that I also investigated the solar scene and figured the ROI was too long. And from what I remember from one of my customers who installed solar is that you get 'credit' toward your bill, not actual cash for generating power and sending it BACK to the elect company. It's a racket, no doubt. I think if you're out in the country, you can get away with more and be more 'off the grid' like, but not where I live in the suburbs, apparently. I think when I went to the Tesla site (and this would include a battery wall + all solar panels) the cost it gave me was 'starting at $65K. Ah, no, no thanks. The tech and cost is going to have to come way down to make me think it's viable.

I don't think so; and my wife tends to put off such things, so no doubt the prescription is older than it should be. I'd call Costco and double check to see if they'd fill a prescription sight unseen and no mention of date issued.

oops, sowwy, Gemm; I was wrong. Mrsbrokensword says she too has to go as prescriptions expire. Sounds like a racket, to me!

Btw, if your prescription ISN'T changing, why would you need to get new glasses? Or are you going to confirm your eyesight is fine? I don't generally go until I definitely sense the sharpness of either near or far is getting fuzzy. I think MY last eye doc appt was 3 years ago, but as I mentioned to j.w; I only wear them when necessary so as not to strain my eyes into NEEDING new glasses every year. I bet I've had maybe 3 different prescriptions the past 40 years or so.

Anyway, sorry I got your hopes up, but maybe you can sweet talk the Costco rep into doing it anyway!

I only go once every 30 yrs to the eye doc 8-) 8-)
I'm not going to get new glasses as mine seem to work fine. Once in awhile my eyes go blurry but think that might be due to dry eyes or maybe unknown allergies. Who knows, but I'm not gonna worry about it.
