Watcha doing today?

@brokensword nice of you to try your best but if it keeps jumping out the parents will still follow it around and feed it.

yeah, I know, but we have feral cats, raccoons, woodchucks, possum, and even chipmunks (had mrsbrokensword google this and apparently, chipmunks WILL go after baby birds, even if they don't actively 'hunt' them!). Figured it might be safer OUT of the pondhouse as we seem to have a resident chipmunk now as I haven't found the hole to block it yet. There USED to be two fledglings and I didn't find the other, so imagining the worst. Ended up putting it in a nearby tree and fencing it in up to about 5'; hopefully the fledgling STAYED in the nest after I put it back, again, for the night. The mom knows where it is, so feeling abit better about it's chances now. I was feeling a bit guilty as I'd just rolled the screen roof back over (kept a hole open right over their nest) and it was after this that I noticed the one chick on the ground. I probably should have just left everything as is but we had a storm of maple tree helicopters and they were all getting into the pond; thought the screen was a good idea at the time but maybe not, ya know?

I just noticed yesterday we have a robin nesting in the tree right by my pond

A Robin's nest is preventing us from finishing the greenhouse...right now it fly away whenever we're approaching but I have a feeling once the eggs hatch it will expect us to to stay away...that's if the eggs don't cook in that heat

it wasn't a good day; no, the fledgling didn't and I found it dead this morning on the ground, contained by the fencing though. Rotten way to start the day. Don't know why/how; maybe the mom didn't keep it warm enough? Hard to imagine it got that chilly as we had high 80s yesterday. I am kicking myself now for even touching the roof screen; should have just waited and fished out all the maple helicopter seeds I guess. This is the problem with watching young animals grow up; they don't ever all make it.

nope, the lil guy didn't make it. Don't know why, either.

Glad you got robins; we had nest OUTSIDE the pond in the magnolia the past two springs but not this one for some reason.

Nice greenhouse j.w.!! I can't imagine that the eggs would survive that heat from the clear panels..I guess when she was building the nest it was cool enough...You could always tape a piece of cardboard temporarily over the nest to shade it....Just a thought....

That's @Gemma 's greenhouse there. I have the robin nesting in a tree by my pond.Haven't seen it in there today. Maybe it decided it was not a good spot. Will keep watching to see if it comes back. Too high up to see if there are eggs in there tho.

I feel pretty guilty for disturbing via the roof screening, though I know it was a few days AFTER I did it that we saw the nestling. And I know baby birds fall out all the time, or are pushed out, still; thought I'd given it a good chance and it was protected. Still don't know why/how it died. They're fragile, sure, but I'd picked it up multiple times and it always had good energy and acted normally after I put it back. Hope I don't ever have to do this again...

guess they're a lot more fragile than I thought. Mowing has always had some of this risk/danger for me and I dread the springtime when baby critters are loose...
